Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Fly from Addis Ababa to Mekelle & Tigray Churches

Fly early from Addis Ababa to Mekelle. Upon arrival, our team will pick you up from Mekelle Airport and drive to Hawzien to visit three stunning rock-hewn churches: Abuna Yemata Guh, Maryam Korkor, and Daniel Korkor. The trek to Abuna Yemata Guh involves a steep one-hour climb with narrow ledges and a 200m drop, offering a thrilling experience for the adventurous. Maryam Korkor impresses with its high ceiling and 12 free-standing pillars, showcasing incredible ancient architecture. After exploring these sacred sites, continue driving to Axum for an overnight stay at Zema Yared Hotel.

Day 2: Visit Axum & Fly Back to Addis Ababa

Discover Axum, the ancient capital of the Axumite Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit the iconic Obelisks of Axum, marvel at the archaeological museum, and explore the Church of St. Mary of Zion, believed to house the Ark of the Covenant. Continue to the ruins of Queen of Sheba’s Palace, Queen of Sheba’s Bath, and the Tombs of Kings Kaleb and Gebre Meskel. After a day steeped in history, drive back to Mekelle and transfer to Mekelle Airport for your late afternoon flight to Addis Ababa.
