The Bale Mountains National Park is a biodiversity hotspot and one of Ethiopia's most spectacular trekking destinations. This 3-day trekking adventure takes you through the stunning Sanetti Plateau and the lush Harenna Forest, home to the endangered Ethiopian wolf and other rare endemic species.
Our carefully planned itinerary combines wildlife viewing with moderate hiking through breathtaking landscapes. With experienced naturalist guides, comfortable camping, and 4x4 transport, we'll take you to the heart of this unique ecosystem - a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.
Fly from Addis Ababa to Bale Robe and be picked up by our experienced driver. Meet our team and drive to Dinsho – the gateway to the Bale Mountains. Set up camp and take a hike to explore the surrounding area and its wildlife. Sightings of Warthog, Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck, and Bohor Reedbuck are common, as well as many Ethiopian and Abyssinian endemic birds. Overnight camping.
After breakfast, strike camp and head to the Sanetti Plateau. As the sun rises, observe the endangered Ethiopian wolf hunting. The plateau, with one of Africa's highest all-weather roads, is ideal for spotting these elegant animals and unique rodents like the giant molerat. Marvel at rare lichens and birds of prey, including golden, tawny, and Verreaux’s eagles, bearded vulture, lanner falcon, and augur buzzard. Visit Tulu Dimtu (4,377m), the highest mountain in the park. Descend the Harenna escarpment to the lush Harenna tropical forest, stopping at Rira village for refreshments or a 2-hour walk to a bamboo-filled canyon with two waterfalls. Look for black-and-white colobus monkeys, Bale monkeys, Menelik’s bushbuck, and birds like the grey cuckoo shrike, Abyssinian catbird, Ruppel’s robin-chat, Abyssinian ground thrush, and white-cheeked turaco. Return to Rira for overnight camping.
Take a short drive south from Rira to the Gushuralle Peak Forest Trail. This 2-3 hour route through dense bamboo forest leads to the summit of Gushuralle, offering stunning views across the Harenna Forest. Watch for Bale monkeys, Menelik’s bushbuck, warthog, colobus monkeys, giant forest hogs, or (rarely) leopards or lions. Return to Goba town and fly back to Addis Ababa. End of tour.
